The First Colonist is the story of Samuel Deighton, the first of the Wakefield settlers ashore at Petone, Wellington, in 1840. He later became a native interpreter at Wanganui, a resident magistrate at Wairoa, and magistrate and Native Land Court judge in the Chatham Islands. He also fought in the campaign against Te Kooti’s rebels. The adventures of Deighton span the sixty years from just before the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi to the turn of the twentieth century, giving an interesting insight to the land and other issues of the time.
