Allan Titford was national news in New Zealand, twice. The first time was in the 1980s, when he and his neighbour were being driven off their Northland farms by people who claimed it was Maori land.

The second time was in 2013 when he was jailed for more than 24 years on 39 charges including raping his wife, bashing his children, threatening to kill, burning down his house, discharging a firearm, perjury, and putting in a false insurance claim.

On prime-time television, he was branded as “a slave driver, a monster and a liar” as well as the bad guy when Maori claimants occupied his farm.

“Innocent nil debit”, was the plea that Allan Titford entered on Day 1 of his trial in 2013. “Nil debit” comes from the Latin for “he owes nothing”.

Innocent Nil Debit puts a spotlight on current criminal justice procedure, including investigations by police, the collection of witness testimony, the behaviour of barristers and judges, the appeals process, parole, perjury, and prejudice.

Eleven majority verdicts show that the jury was unconvinced. Has an innocent man been convicted and sentenced to a near-record jail term?

The book sounds a warning: What happened to Allan could happen to you.
